Lake Hévíz is located close to Hévíz, Hungary, near the western end of Lake Balaton, It is the second largest thermal mineral spring lake in the world (47,500 square metres in area). The flow of water is very strong and the lake is believed to be completely replenished each day. The waters are reported to have curative effects, and there is a thriving health tourism industry in the area. The Heviz Lake is a geological curiosity, Europe's 2nd largest thermal lake - a warm water lake situated in a peat-bed. The 4.44 ha water-surface lake is surrounded by a 60.5 ha nature conservation area. Springs of different temperatures diffuse in a narrow cave, and became a constant (38,5 °C) temperature stream when entering the lake. Beautiful water lilies, brought to Hungary at the end of the 19th century, dot the lake, supporting the eco-life, with leaves slowing down evaporation, and creepers protecting the medicinal mud on the bottom of the lake. As the Lake Heviz region has been populated since the end of the 4th century, BC., the unique lake was used as a spa throughout the ages. The present spa village started to form around the end of the 18th century, receiving further recognition and expansion in the early 20th century, when vacation houses were built, along with a bath house right on the lake. In 1992, the village became a town, which brought further improvements of the infrastructure. The water's and the lake bed's specific composition leads to unique micro organisms, which contribute to the thermal water's healing power . It has been researched, and said especially good for preventing and treating various types of locomotors disease. The thermal water is rich in dissolved gas components, such as of carbonate, sulphur, calcium, magnesium and hydrogen carbonate. Complex balneotherapy or drinking cure may favorably affect and heal rheum, osteoporosis, degenerative spinal/joint diseases, Bechterew syndrome, inflammation diseases of the joint in their chronic phase, tender tissue rheum, secondary diseases of the joints, as well as chronic, peripheral, nervous, and mechanical-related complaints. It may be used for post treatment of injuries and locomotors operations. Tradition of balneotherapy using peat in Hungary and the Czech health spas is over 200 years old. Basis of current scientific research into peat and mud therapies was laid down in1938 by establishment of Research Institute of Balneotherapy in Františkovy Lázně. After WWII the Czech health spa industry sector became a part of national healthcare system. After collapse of communism and privatization of health spa industry in 1990, Torf Krásno was established to continue the long Czech traditions in peat balneotherapy and supply required quality of therapeutic moor peat to spas. Central European practices in balneotherapy require materials used in therapy to be in their natural, unaltered form. To retain the maximum healing power, therapy grade peat has to be in its natural form, never dried (heating and drying destroys peat’s cellular structure and most of it’s thermal benefits), free of preservatives and additives and appropriately matured (humified). Lower pH is a typical mark of peat’s required maturity. Because of this, only spas in close proximity were able to use peat in the past. Now, thanks to Torf Krásno’s development of a special packaging (plastic sachets, this limitation is no longer the case and Torf is able to deliver the unaltered natural peat to natural health practices around the world. Torf Krásno peat bog is located in the middle of an area rich in mineral springs with beneficial properties, utilized by many well known spa resorts, in an area free of any major industrial activity, due to close proximity of the protected Czech National Forest. This integrated whole can shortly be called health. The elements have a healing effect in themselves, but their joint presence increases their efficiency in the course of healing, rehabilitation and health promotion. If it is Hévíz, the most important healing element is bathing in the thermal lake. The gentle and smothering touch of the water, the feeling of floating, the swinging lotus flowers, the odour of the healing water and the green leafy crown of the surrounding trees all have a calming effect on the nervous system, and evoke the psychological feeling of healing .
